ECUADOR
GENERAL INFORMATION Ecuador is one small country that spans from the Galapagos Islands, to the Pacific Coast, up to the Andes Mountains and down to the world´s largest rainforest, the Amazon Basin. Ecuador's unequalled natural beauty, diverse population, and fascinating history make it an incredible travel destination. Explore the Amazon jungle in a dug-out canoe; learn Spanish or Quichua, the language of Ecuador's largest indigenous group; experience diverse cultural festivals, including colorful Indigenous and vibrant Afro-Ecuadorian celebrations; scuba dive with sea lions and exotic fish in the waters of the Galapagos Islands; teach English to street kids in Quito or Guayaquil; hike to the top of the world's highest active volcano; go bird watching in pristine cloudforests; help rehabilitate wounded condors; bargain with locals at markets that have remained unchanged for a thousand years; search for Incan ruins |

Important
Note: Tourists are always advised to carry their passports since controls are carried out on a regular basis, specially along the Amazonas avenue or near the airport in Quito. People without identification papers might receive penalties. Weather: In spite of Ecuador’s location on the tropics, because of different altitudes, each region has its own climate and vegetation. Throughout the Coast and eastern jungle - the “Oriente” - the weather is tropical, and in the Sierra or Andean Region, temperatures range from mild to cold. The rainy season is from October to May, with daily rain showers specially in the afternoons, although you may be surprised with very sunny days. The rest of the year there is almost no rainfall. Clothing: In Guayaquil, the Coast and the Oriente, you will need summer clothing all year around; however, in Quito and the Sierra in general, this is recommended only from May to August. For the rest of the year, you will need warm clothing and a raincoat. |
